Eric’s random thoughts #1: Why the world secretly roots for Wile Coyote!

So I’m hoping to do this weekly, even though I’m sure some of you are sick of me talking so much around here…but when has that ever stopped me?!

The famous boulder scene

Now when I was a kid I would always root for that Road Runner but looking back on some of these classics…he’s kind of a jerk. Wile was just hungry and hell he was a resourceful little creature.

I think Chuck Jones was a very brilliant man who secretly wanted people to cheer for that hungry coyote as you realize that it really is kind of about survival and the thrill of the hunt.

The fact that the poor guy constantly gets beat up by these inventions by ACME and yet never gives up his hunt for this fast creature kind of seems to be a message to always reach for your dreams.

I also think that the poor Coyote has enough brain damage to last a lifetime, by the end of all those shorts I’m surprised he makes it into space jam. Talking too!

I even asked a few people at work tonight who they rooted for and they agreed on Wile Coyote. You’d think the roadrunner could get the poor guy a burger or something?

So what are your thoughts readers? Do you side with the guy with the horrible luck and apparently lots of money to invest in shoddy traps or do you side with the speedy creature who apparently likes torturing the Coyote?

  1. I gotta say, while I always felt for Wile as I could sympathize, the sarcastic nature of the Road Runner always appealed to me. So I have to side with my fellow feathered friend. Meep Meep

    Says the Gonzogoose… HONK!

  2. Chad Strohl says:

Wile E. did catch Roadrunner once that I remember. He had him tied up and then held up a sign that asked “What do I do now?” Talk about deep stuff. The hack philosophers and psychologists of reknown try to explain everything, but Wile just poses the question… when the attainment of all you’ve ever wanted is at your fingertips… what do you do now?
