New Comic Day

NCD #149

A Word From One of the Creators

From the desk of Eric Ratcliffe

I really need to stop writing these at 3 in the morning. Mostly because Brant gets to edit what I’m saying so it actually makes sense.

The basic idea for this strip existed when I pitched the original 3 months of year 3. It was a simple, “Eric wants to be trained by Hawkeye who, just like in real life, is very much my favorite Avenger!” He always has been and will always be.

For those that don’t know, one of my first comics was Avengers West Coast #100 where Mockingbird is seemingly killed by Mephisto, and the team, Hawkeye the most, is hit pretty hard by this. It’s Avengers story telling at its best and it’s resonated with me all these years later. In fact, a lot of my favorite Avengers moments come from the violet clad archer. Like Avengers Forever, which is easily on of my favorite comics of all time.

The other thing I wanted to bring to people’s attention here: it’s hard writing Captain America. Like really, really hard. Heck, if it comes to any character that’s guest starred in New Comic Day so far that I’ve had trouble writing? It’s Steve. I’ve grown to love the character thanks to Ed Brubaker’s run (though I finally got to read the amazing Mark Waid run and I’m trying to hunt down some Gruenwald material; Bill gave me a few of his issues a while back). I was nervous to just flat out get his voice right. If people dig it, I would love to have him appear again somewhere in year 4.

Anyways, on to the bad news…with year 3 coming to an end in July, so is our good friend Chad Strohl’s time with New Comic Day. Chad will be stepping away with the end of year 3. What that means, of course, is that we are looking for a new artist (which Chad will be helping us with, almost American Idol style). You, of course, will get plenty of exposure with a steady audience, but sadly it’s not a paying gig. If you’re interested, email me and I can send you some test strips and we can go from there.

It’s a bummer that Chad’s leaving because New Comic Day will not be the same without him. He’s been here since the start and I wish him nothing but the best in the future when he does head out. He’s a good friend and he’s always been an incredible sounding board to bounce ideas off of as well as improving material that was weaker before he touched it.

Next week…Brant meets with Tony Stark, but why? Find out in 7, folks!

Flatting NCD #85

Hey folks, Brant Fowler here, NCD letterer and occasional flatter with my first NCD flatting video.

In this video I show me partially flatting NCD #85. I say partially because as I was recording this my programs locked up on me twice and I had to completely start over. The third time I was afraid to record the rest, so I only got to record a little of it.

What I did record was duped a bit a little over halfway through, but not much.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and if you do I’ll try to do more as I can.

A request from Eric

Hey guys, I just wanted to say a few words and link those that are able to vote to this.

I love doing this strip, hell for almost 2 years now we have a completely clean track record and have nothing but positive comments from the fanbase.

There are 5 people that work to get this strip out. We have 2 writers, an artist, a colorist and a letterer. And honestly this team happens to be 4 of the most talented people I know.

This leads me to my point with this blog post, The Harvey awards are now open to nominations and anyone on the creative side of making comics can submit. harvey award nominations!

if I can come off as humble here I’d love if people could nominate NCD in the following categories:

Best Letterer: Brant Fowler – New Comic Day

Best Colorer: Lisa Moore – New Comic Day

Best Online comics work: New Comic Day

Special Award for humor in comics: Chad Strohl for New Comic Day

Obviously I myself or Bill understandly would not be up in the best writer category which is loaded with names like Kirkman and Johns usually but I think realistically we could find outselves getting best online comic work if someone really noticed us.

If you’re not able to vote, please pass the word. Help us gain a bit more attention and possibly one of the coolest accolades yet.

That’s it from my soapbox, see you guys Wednesday for the usual strip!

NCD Voted Best Webcomic of 2010!

It may not be an official award or anything like that, but someone at least digs what we’re doing here with New Comic Day!

I am, of course, referring to ComicRelated.com columnist and reviewer (and soon to be podcaster?) David O’Leary voting NCD as the best webcomic of 2010!!!

Yes, we’re that shameless that we’ll take what we can get! lol But in all seriousness, David is an excellent reviewer with in depth takes on the books he reviews, and a superb interview columnist who gets big names to talk about really cool stuff. So all of us here on the NCD crew have much love and respect for our foreign friend overseas and greatly appreciate the nod he has graciously given us. Along with the NCD live episodes UVN has provided us and the extra strips we were able to churn out for the holidays (look for another one coming on New Year’s Eve!), this honor has rounded out the holiday and made this a WONDERFUL Christmas for NCD! So, thank you, David!!!

Halloween 2010 Gone Already?

I’m looking at the calender today and it reads November 3rd. Wait a minute!  What happened to October 31st!?!

Did we have Halloween this year? Did we get an abbreviated version of own of my favorite holidays?! (if you want to call Halloween a holiday)

Is it just me or did Halloween 2010 just get a quick mention and it’s already Christmas 2010? There were more Christmas dispalys up in stores then displays for Halloween.

What;s going on here?

And perhaps the scariest thing about Halloween that I noticed this year…have you seen the size of those Reese’s Peanut Butter cups? When did these things get so small? They’re almost the size of a quarter.

Somethings not right. This much I know. Halloween 2011 people may just be passing out candy canes.
